Tom Wood

Born in East Africa, raised in Bradford and currently working in Hong Kong, Tom has paintings held in collections throughout the world. A consummate artist, he is renowned for his portraits (the National Portrait Gallery has four – Prince Charles, Alan Bennett, Sir Robert Winston and Frank Bruno) yet this is only a small part of his output. His use of symbols is rarely explained but often a motif can appear repeatedly but in potentially different guises – for example the image of a house can evoke a sense of domesticity and safety, yet this can also imply the world of subterfuge as in a safe house or an institution such as a prison. Religion can also be implied dependent on the scale one applies such as a church or reliquary. The relevance of the imagery is mostly left to the viewer to provide one’s own interpretation. Tom makes no secret of his passion for and debt to other artists. Elements appear in homage, yet reworked and made his - such as his multiple interpretations of the veiled beauty in Portrait of a Lady by Robert Campin in the National Gallery, London.
